The fastest direct journeys take approximately 2 hours 30 minutes, making it easy to combine Barcelona and Madrid within the same holiday.
Use Barcelona for Mediterranean architecture, beaches, and Gaudí landmarks, then continue to Madrid for museums, historic neighbourhoods, royal landmarks, and day trips into central Spain.

Madrid to Seville
Travel from central Spain into Andalusia in approximately 2 hours 40 minutes on direct AVE or iryo services.
The route makes it easy to combine Madrid with Seville without losing most of your day in transit.

Direct AVE and iryo trains connect Madrid with Valencia in approximately 1 hour 50 minutes.

How many travel days should you choose?
Your pass duration refers to the number of days on which you travel by train, not the total length of your holiday.
For example, you could spend 10 days in Spain but only use five travel days if you take the train between cities on five of those days.
3-Day Spain Flex Pass
A good choice for a shorter trip with a few major rail journeys.
You could, for example, travel from Barcelona to Madrid on your first travel day, Madrid to Seville on your second, and Seville to Málaga on your third.
Choose this if: You are staying longer in each destination and only need trains for a few major intercity transfers.
4-Day Spain Flex Pass
Adds another day of rail travel without committing to a larger pass.
This can work well for a four-city itinerary or for travelers who want one extra travel day for a day trip or additional stop.

Steps to activate your Spain Travel Pass
2. Add your pass to the Rail Planner App
Download the Rail Planner app on your phone.
Open My Pass, select the option to add your pass, and enter your pass details exactly as provided in your confirmation.
Adding the pass to the app does not mean you have to start travelling immediately.
A mobile pass can generally be activated for travel within 11 months of purchase, although promotional products can have different conditions.
3. Activate your Pass
Before your first train journey, activate the pass in the Rail Planner app.
You will need:
- The passport or ID document you are travelling with
- The corresponding document number
- The date on which you intend to start using the pass
Your pass must be activated before boarding your first train.
If your plans are not final yet, you do not need to activate the pass immediately after purchase.
4. Choose your travel day
Because these are Flex Passes, each day on which you want to use the pass must be activated as a travel day.
Do this before boarding the first train of the day.
If your plans change, a future travel day can generally be cancelled before that calendar day begins. Once the travel day has started, it is considered used.

- Your mobile pass: Your Eurail or Interrail Spain Flex Pass is stored in the Rail Planner app. Before boarding, make sure the correct travel day is active and your journey has been added to your pass so you can display the ticket during inspection.
- Seat reservation tickets: Your Spain Travel Pass and your seat reservation are two separate things. Many Spanish high-speed and long-distance trains, including AVE, iryo, Euromed, Alvia, Avant, and Intercity services, require mandatory reservations. Keep the reservation for each applicable train ready alongside your mobile pass.
- Passport or valid photo ID: Carry the passport or photo ID associated with your pass. Your pass is personal and the traveler details must match your identification, which may be checked along with your ticket during the journey.
- Passes and reservations for children: Eligible children may receive free Child Passes, but they still need their own valid pass where applicable. If the train requires a seat reservation, make sure each child also has the necessary reservation before boarding.
- Your smartphone: Since your ticket is stored digitally, keep the phone containing your Rail Planner app with you throughout the journey. Make sure the app is updated and that you can access your pass before reaching the platform.
- Phone charger or power bank: Start longer travel days with a fully charged phone and carry a charger or power bank. Some Spanish trains provide power sockets, including selected Renfe services, but facilities vary by train, so it is safer not to rely on onboard charging alone.
- Check your luggage allowance before you board: Luggage rules are set by the train operator rather than by the Eurail or Interrail pass itself. Renfe and iryo have their own baggage conditions, and allowances can vary by service or fare. If you are carrying large suitcases or special luggage, check your operator's rules before travelling rather than assuming the same allowance applies to every train.
- Reserve the important trains first: Spain's fastest intercity trains are extremely useful for routes such as Madrid–Barcelona, Madrid–Seville, and Madrid–Valencia, but many require a reservation. If your itinerary depends on a particular AVE, iryo, Alvia, Euromed, or other reservation-mandatory departure, secure the seat before arranging tightly timed activities around it.
- Don't confuse Rail Planner with a seat booking: Adding a train to your trip and activating your travel day makes the journey part of your pass, but it does not reserve a seat. Always check whether the train also requires a separate reservation before boarding.
- Use one travel day wisely: Once a travel day is activated, you can take multiple eligible trains during that calendar day. If your itinerary involves a connection, or two worthwhile rail journeys that comfortably fit on the same date, you can group them under one travel day instead of using another pass day.
- Travel light for multi-city itineraries: If your route includes several cities, smaller luggage can make station changes considerably easier. Unlike air travel, you generally keep your bags with you on the train and are responsible for storing and supervising them during the journey.
- Taking a bike? Check the operator first: Bicycle rules differ between Renfe and iryo. On some Renfe long-distance services, a bicycle carried as special luggage can require an additional booking, while iryo requires bicycles to be dismantled and packed in an appropriate closed bag or case. Check your exact train before arriving at the station.
- Traveling with a pet? Plan it separately: Your rail pass does not automatically cover a pet. Renfe and iryo both allow pets on selected services under specific conditions, but weight limits, carriers, documentation, additional tickets, and rules for larger dogs vary by operator. Arrange your pet's travel directly according to the company operating your train.
- Wi-Fi varies by train: Don't assume every service will offer the same connectivity. iryo provides onboard Wi-Fi, while Renfe offers PlayRenfe connectivity on selected services. Download tickets, hotel information, maps, and anything essential before travelling so your journey does not depend on having a stable connection.
- Leave time at major stations: Madrid and Barcelona's principal long-distance stations can be busy. Arrive with enough time to find your platform, complete any boarding checks, and have both your pass and reservation open before boarding.
- Check the operator, not just the route: Your Spain Travel Pass covers participating rail services, not every train or local transport system simply because it operates in Spain. Before travelling, confirm that the specific operator and service are covered by your pass.
If a Spain One Country Pass does not match your itinerary, a Global Pass may be a better fit, especially if Spain is only one part of a longer European trip.
- Eurail Global Pass: Best suited to travelers who live outside Europe and want to travel by train across Spain as well as other participating European countries. Choose this instead of a Spain One Country Pass if your itinerary continues through destinations such as France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, or several other countries.

- Spain One Country Pass: Stick with the Eurail or Interrail Spain Flex Pass if most of your rail travel will take place within Spain. You can choose 3, 4, 5, 6, or 8 travel days within one month without paying for multi-country pass coverage you do not plan to use.

What is the difference between 1st and 2nd class?
A 2nd-class pass is valid for eligible 2nd-class travel. A 1st-class pass is valid in eligible 1st-class and 2nd-class carriages. The actual seating, space, catering, lounge access, and onboard amenities vary by train and operator.
