What are Spain Travel Passes?

A Spain travel pass gives you one flexible way to explore the country by rail instead of purchasing a separate ticket for every eligible journey. Use your selected travel days to connect major cities, coastal destinations, smaller towns, and different regions across Spain's participating rail network.

Both the Eurail Spain Flex Pass and Interrail Spain Flex Pass give you a choice of 3, 4, 5, 6, or 8 travel days within one month. Your travel days do not need to be consecutive. On each activated travel day, you can take multiple eligible trains, making the passes especially useful for multi-city itineraries.

Spain's pass network includes services operated by Renfe and iryo, covering everything from slower regional trains to high-speed connections between cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Málaga, and Alicante. Some trains require a separate seat reservation, so it is important to plan both your travel days and reservations before setting off.

Types of Spain Travel Passes

Eurail Spain Flex Pass

Eligibility: Travelers who live outside Europe

  • Choose 3, 4, 5, 6, or 8 travel days within one month.
  • Use your travel days whenever you need them within the one-month validity period.
  • Take multiple eligible train journeys on each activated travel day.
  • Access participating regional, intercity, and high-speed rail services across Spain.
  • Choose between 1st and 2nd class.
  • Use your mobile pass through the Rail Planner app.
  • Get access to selected pass-holder discounts on attractions, accommodation, ferries, and other travel experiences.
  • Families can get up to two free Child Passes for eligible children travelling with an adult pass holder. Youth and senior fare categories are also available.

Interrail Spain Flex Pass

Eligibility: European residents travelling in Spain

  • Choose 3, 4, 5, 6, or 8 travel days within one month.
  • Spread your travel days across the month or use them close together depending on your itinerary.
  • Take multiple eligible rail journeys during each activated travel day.
  • Travel on participating regional, intercity, and high-speed trains across Spain.
  • Choose between 1st and 2nd class.
  • Manage your pass and journeys digitally using the Rail Planner app.
  • Get selected pass-holder discounts on attractions, hotels, ferry journeys, and other travel services.
  • Families can benefit from free Child Passes for eligible children, while youth and senior fare categories offer reduced prices.

Important: An Interrail One Country Pass cannot be used to explore your own country of residence. If Spain is your country of residence, you cannot use an Interrail Spain One Country Pass for domestic travel around Spain.

Spain Travel Pass: Inclusions

Access to Spain's participating rail network

Use your Spain Travel Pass across participating rail services within Spain instead of purchasing a separate eligible ticket every time you change cities.

Your pass gives you access to participating services operated by Spanish rail companies, including Renfe and iryo, subject to the conditions of your pass and any reservation requirements for the train you choose.

This makes the pass particularly useful for itineraries that combine several cities or regions.

Access to high-speed and long-distance trains

Spain has one of Europe's most useful high-speed rail networks for multi-city travel.

Your pass can be used on eligible services such as AVE, Alvia, Euromed, Avant, Intercity, and iryo, allowing you to combine major cities without booking a completely separate point-to-point rail ticket for every journey.

Popular direct high-speed connections include:

  • Barcelona to Madrid
  • Madrid to Valencia
  • Madrid to Seville
  • Madrid to Málaga
  • Madrid to Granada
  • Barcelona to Valencia
  • Barcelona to Málaga
  • Madrid to Santiago de Compostela

Many of these services require a separate seat reservation before boarding.

Flexible travel days

Choose 3, 4, 5, 6, or 8 travel days within one month according to the pass option you book.

These are Flex Passes, which means your travel days do not have to be consecutive.

For example, with a 4-day pass, you could travel:

  • Barcelona to Valencia on Monday
  • Valencia to Madrid on Thursday
  • Madrid to Seville the following Sunday
  • Seville to your next Spanish destination several days later

The days between those journeys do not use your pass.

This allows you to stay in a city for as long as you like before activating your next travel day.

Multiple journeys on one travel day

A travel day is not limited to one train.

Once you activate a travel day, you can use multiple eligible trains during that calendar day. This can be particularly helpful when your route requires a connection or when you want to combine two rail journeys.

For example:

Madrid → Córdoba → Seville

can fall within one travel day if both journeys take place on the same activated date.

A travel day runs from midnight until 11:59pm.

Remember that every journey must still be added to your pass before you board, and mandatory seat reservations remain separate.

1st and 2nd class options

Choose between 1st and 2nd class when booking your Spain Flex Pass.

A 2nd-class pass is the more budget-focused option and covers eligible travel in 2nd-class carriages.

A 1st-class pass gives you access to eligible 1st-class accommodation and can also be used in 2nd class. A 2nd-class pass cannot be used in 1st class.

Facilities vary between trains and operators, so the exact difference in seating, space, services, or onboard amenities will depend on the service you choose.

Family, youth, and senior benefits

Spain Travel Passes can also work well for families and travelers who qualify for age-based fares.

Eligible children aged 4 to 11 can travel with a free Child Pass. Up to two Child Passes can accompany one qualifying Youth, Adult, or Senior Pass holder aged 18 or older.

Children under 4 generally do not require a pass unless they need their own seat or bed.

Youth travelers aged 12 to 27 can qualify for Youth Pass pricing, while travelers aged 60 and above can qualify for Senior Pass pricing.

Mandatory train reservations are still separate and may be required for children as well.

Barcelona to Madrid

Travel directly between Spain's two biggest cities on AVE or iryo high-speed trains.

The fastest direct journeys take approximately 2 hours 30 minutes, making it easy to combine Barcelona and Madrid within the same holiday.

Use Barcelona for Mediterranean architecture, beaches, and Gaudí landmarks, then continue to Madrid for museums, historic neighbourhoods, royal landmarks, and day trips into central Spain.

Reservation: Mandatory on AVE and iryo trains.

Madrid to Seville

Travel from central Spain into Andalusia in approximately 2 hours 40 minutes on direct AVE or iryo services.

The route makes it easy to combine Madrid with Seville without losing most of your day in transit.

Reservation: Mandatory.

Madrid to Valencia

Direct AVE and iryo trains connect Madrid with Valencia in approximately 1 hour 50 minutes.

It is an easy addition to an itinerary that combines Spain's inland cities with the Mediterranean coast.

Reservation: Mandatory on the relevant high-speed services.

Barcelona to Valencia

Euromed trains travel along Spain's Mediterranean coast between Barcelona and Valencia in approximately 2 hours 50 minutes.

Continue farther south towards Alicante if you want to build a longer Mediterranean itinerary.

Reservation: Mandatory on Euromed.

Madrid to Granada

Direct AVE trains connect Madrid and Granada in approximately 3 hours 35 minutes.

This route makes Granada and the Alhambra much easier to combine with a stay in the Spanish capital.

Reservation: Mandatory.

Barcelona to Málaga

Travel from Catalonia to the Costa del Sol by direct high-speed train in approximately 5 hours 50 minutes.

Although the journey is longer than many other Spanish high-speed connections, it allows you to cross a large part of the country without taking a domestic flight.

Reservation: Mandatory.

Madrid to Santiago de Compostela

Alvia services connect Madrid with Santiago de Compostela in approximately 3 hours 15 minutes.

It is a useful route if you want to combine central Spain with Galicia and experience a very different landscape, food culture, and historic setting.

Reservation: Mandatory.

How many travel days should you choose?

Your pass duration refers to the number of days on which you travel by train, not the total length of your holiday.

For example, you could spend 10 days in Spain but only use five travel days if you take the train between cities on five of those days.

3-Day Spain Flex Pass

A good choice for a shorter trip with a few major rail journeys.

You could, for example, travel from Barcelona to Madrid on your first travel day, Madrid to Seville on your second, and Seville to Málaga on your third.

Choose this if: You are staying longer in each destination and only need trains for a few major intercity transfers.

4-Day Spain Flex Pass

Adds another day of rail travel without committing to a larger pass.

This can work well for a four-city itinerary or for travelers who want one extra travel day for a day trip or additional stop.

Choose this if: You have three to four important travel legs and want a little more flexibility.

5-Day Spain Flex Pass

A useful middle ground for a multi-city holiday.

You can connect several major destinations while keeping non-travel days free for sightseeing, beaches, museums, food tours, or simply slowing down.

Choose this if: You are planning a broader Spain itinerary with several cities or regions.

6-Day Spain Flex Pass

Gives you more freedom to add secondary cities, day trips, or longer transfers to your itinerary.

Choose this if: You are spending around two weeks exploring Spain and expect to use trains frequently.

8-Day Spain Flex Pass

The most extensive option available with these Spain Flex Passes.

It works particularly well if rail travel is going to be a major part of your trip or if you plan to explore several different regions.

Choose this if: You are building a rail-focused Spain itinerary with multiple stops and frequent train journeys.

Steps to activate your Spain Travel Pass

1. Confirmation

After purchasing your Eurail Spain Flex Pass or Interrail Spain Flex Pass, you will receive confirmation with the details needed to access your mobile pass.

Keep this information handy until you have successfully added the pass to your Rail Planner app.

Swiss Travel Pass - Activation

2. Add your pass to the Rail Planner App

Download the Rail Planner app on your phone.

Open My Pass, select the option to add your pass, and enter your pass details exactly as provided in your confirmation.

Adding the pass to the app does not mean you have to start travelling immediately.

A mobile pass can generally be activated for travel within 11 months of purchase, although promotional products can have different conditions.

Swiss Travel Pass - Reservation

3. Activate your Pass

Before your first train journey, activate the pass in the Rail Planner app.

You will need:

  • The passport or ID document you are travelling with
  • The corresponding document number
  • The date on which you intend to start using the pass

Your pass must be activated before boarding your first train.

If your plans are not final yet, you do not need to activate the pass immediately after purchase.

Swiss Travel Pass - Use your pass

4. Choose your travel day

Because these are Flex Passes, each day on which you want to use the pass must be activated as a travel day.

Do this before boarding the first train of the day.

If your plans change, a future travel day can generally be cancelled before that calendar day begins. Once the travel day has started, it is considered used.

5. Use your pass

Before boarding:

  • Activate the correct travel day.
  • Add your journey to the pass.
  • Keep your mobile ticket ready.

What to carry
Tips & tricks
Other passes
  • Your mobile pass: Your Eurail or Interrail Spain Flex Pass is stored in the Rail Planner app. Before boarding, make sure the correct travel day is active and your journey has been added to your pass so you can display the ticket during inspection.
  • Seat reservation tickets: Your Spain Travel Pass and your seat reservation are two separate things. Many Spanish high-speed and long-distance trains, including AVE, iryo, Euromed, Alvia, Avant, and Intercity services, require mandatory reservations. Keep the reservation for each applicable train ready alongside your mobile pass.
  • Passport or valid photo ID: Carry the passport or photo ID associated with your pass. Your pass is personal and the traveler details must match your identification, which may be checked along with your ticket during the journey.
  • Passes and reservations for children: Eligible children may receive free Child Passes, but they still need their own valid pass where applicable. If the train requires a seat reservation, make sure each child also has the necessary reservation before boarding.
  • Your smartphone: Since your ticket is stored digitally, keep the phone containing your Rail Planner app with you throughout the journey. Make sure the app is updated and that you can access your pass before reaching the platform.
  • Phone charger or power bank: Start longer travel days with a fully charged phone and carry a charger or power bank. Some Spanish trains provide power sockets, including selected Renfe services, but facilities vary by train, so it is safer not to rely on onboard charging alone.
  • Check your luggage allowance before you board: Luggage rules are set by the train operator rather than by the Eurail or Interrail pass itself. Renfe and iryo have their own baggage conditions, and allowances can vary by service or fare. If you are carrying large suitcases or special luggage, check your operator's rules before travelling rather than assuming the same allowance applies to every train.
  • Reserve the important trains first: Spain's fastest intercity trains are extremely useful for routes such as Madrid–Barcelona, Madrid–Seville, and Madrid–Valencia, but many require a reservation. If your itinerary depends on a particular AVE, iryo, Alvia, Euromed, or other reservation-mandatory departure, secure the seat before arranging tightly timed activities around it.
  • Don't confuse Rail Planner with a seat booking: Adding a train to your trip and activating your travel day makes the journey part of your pass, but it does not reserve a seat. Always check whether the train also requires a separate reservation before boarding.
  • Use one travel day wisely: Once a travel day is activated, you can take multiple eligible trains during that calendar day. If your itinerary involves a connection, or two worthwhile rail journeys that comfortably fit on the same date, you can group them under one travel day instead of using another pass day.
  • Travel light for multi-city itineraries: If your route includes several cities, smaller luggage can make station changes considerably easier. Unlike air travel, you generally keep your bags with you on the train and are responsible for storing and supervising them during the journey.
  • Taking a bike? Check the operator first: Bicycle rules differ between Renfe and iryo. On some Renfe long-distance services, a bicycle carried as special luggage can require an additional booking, while iryo requires bicycles to be dismantled and packed in an appropriate closed bag or case. Check your exact train before arriving at the station.
  • Traveling with a pet? Plan it separately: Your rail pass does not automatically cover a pet. Renfe and iryo both allow pets on selected services under specific conditions, but weight limits, carriers, documentation, additional tickets, and rules for larger dogs vary by operator. Arrange your pet's travel directly according to the company operating your train.
  • Wi-Fi varies by train: Don't assume every service will offer the same connectivity. iryo provides onboard Wi-Fi, while Renfe offers PlayRenfe connectivity on selected services. Download tickets, hotel information, maps, and anything essential before travelling so your journey does not depend on having a stable connection.
  • Leave time at major stations: Madrid and Barcelona's principal long-distance stations can be busy. Arrive with enough time to find your platform, complete any boarding checks, and have both your pass and reservation open before boarding.
  • Check the operator, not just the route: Your Spain Travel Pass covers participating rail services, not every train or local transport system simply because it operates in Spain. Before travelling, confirm that the specific operator and service are covered by your pass.

If a Spain One Country Pass does not match your itinerary, a Global Pass may be a better fit, especially if Spain is only one part of a longer European trip.

  • Eurail Global Pass: Best suited to travelers who live outside Europe and want to travel by train across Spain as well as other participating European countries. Choose this instead of a Spain One Country Pass if your itinerary continues through destinations such as France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, or several other countries.
  • Interrail Global Pass: Designed for European residents who want to travel across multiple participating European countries rather than limiting their pass to Spain. It is a better option for a broader European rail itinerary.
  • Spain One Country Pass: Stick with the Eurail or Interrail Spain Flex Pass if most of your rail travel will take place within Spain. You can choose 3, 4, 5, 6, or 8 travel days within one month without paying for multi-country pass coverage you do not plan to use.

Not sure which one works for your trip? Start with your itinerary. If your rail journeys remain within Spain, choose a Spain One Country Pass. If you plan to use the pass for substantial rail travel across several European countries, compare the Global Pass options instead.

Frequently asked questions about Spain Travel Passes

What is a Spain Travel Pass?

A Spain Travel Pass gives you access to eligible participating trains within Spain for a set number of travel days. The Eurail Spain Flex Pass and Interrail Spain Flex Pass available here let you choose 3, 4, 5, 6, or 8 travel days within one month. Your travel days do not need to be consecutive.

What is the difference between Eurail and Interrail for Spain?

The main difference is residency. Eurail is intended for travelers who reside outside Europe. Interrail is intended for European residents. An Interrail One Country Pass cannot be used within the holder's country of residence, so a resident of Spain cannot use an Interrail Spain One Country Pass to travel around Spain.

Am I eligible for an Interrail Spain Flex Pass?

Interrail passes are designed for European residents. However, you cannot use a Spain One Country Pass if Spain is your country of residence.

What is a travel day?

A travel day is a calendar day during which you can use your Flex Pass for eligible journeys. It runs from midnight until 11:59pm. You can take multiple eligible trains during the same activated travel day.

What is the difference between 1st and 2nd class?

A 2nd-class pass is valid for eligible 2nd-class travel. A 1st-class pass is valid in eligible 1st-class and 2nd-class carriages. The actual seating, space, catering, lounge access, and onboard amenities vary by train and operator.
