Riding the Bernina Express was truly an unforgettable experience. The views along the journey were absolutely breathtaking — every moment felt like a postcard coming to life, with stunning mountains, glaciers, and charming alpine villages passing by. The service on board was excellent, with a very attentive and professional staff who made the entire trip even more enjoyable. Everything was extremely well organized, from boarding to the overall flow of the journey, which allowed me to simply relax and fully take in the beauty around me. It’s one of those experiences that goes beyond just transportation — it’s something you feel, appreciate, and remember. Highly recommended for anyone who values incredible scenery combined with comfort and top-level service.

+ 1 more

I bought tickets in advance for me and my friend, the carriage has been changed and we had separated seats, the weather was cloudy but the train clean and nice. There was quite a bit of fog, and at one point it felt like we were floating among the clouds, which kept us from seeing the scenery in all its splendor. On top of that, the raindrops on the windows of the Bernina Express ruined our photos. On the way back, we took the red local Bernina train—the Bernina Railway—and it was absolutely stunning. We opened the window and took photos—the fog had lifted, the rain had stopped, and everything looked breathtaking.

Combo: Bernina Express Ticket + Bernina Red Train Ticket

The Bernina Red Train refers to the regular regional trains operated by the Rhaetian Railway that travel across the Swiss Alps between Chur, St. Moritz, and Tirano. These trains run along the UNESCO-listed Albula–Bernina Railway, offering the same dramatic alpine scenery—glaciers, lakes, viaducts, and mountain passes—as the panoramic Bernina Express.

Bernina Red Train at a glance

  • Operator: Rhaetian Railway
  • Route: UNESCO-listed Albula–Bernina Railway
  • Main towns connected: Chur, St. Moritz, and Tirano
  • Total route length: ~144 km across the Swiss Alps
  • Seat reservations: Not required
  • Ticket flexibility: Board any train on the route the same day
  • Train classes: 1st and 2nd class seating available

Good to know: The Bernina Red Train runs on the same UNESCO-listed Albula–Bernina Railway as the Bernina Express. The difference is flexibility. No seat reservations and more freedom to stop along the way. It’s a great choice if you like traveling at your own pace or want the best shot of the Alps from an open window.

How the flexible ticket works

One of the biggest advantages of the Bernina Red Train is flexibility. Unlike the Bernina Express, you don’t need a fixed departure or seat reservation.

  • Board any train on the route the same day
Travel between Chur, St. Moritz, and Tirano on regional trains. Just show your ticket and hop on the next available departure.
  • No seat reservations required
Seating is first-come, first-served in both 1st and 2nd class. Arrive a little early if you want a window seat.
  • Hop off at scenic stations
Regional trains stop at more stations along the Albula–Bernina Railway, so you can break your journey and continue later.

The Bernina Express: the Alps, but better

The Bernina Red Train shows you the route. The Bernina Express elevates it—with panoramic windows, reserved seating, onboard commentary, and a more refined, immersive journey across the Alps. Same iconic landscapes, just a more premium experience.

Things to know before you book your Bernina Red Train ticket

  • Red Train tickets do not include seat reservations. Seating in both 1st and 2nd class is first-come, first-served, so arriving a little early helps you secure a window seat.
  • Your ticket is flexible, which means you can take any regional train running between Chur, St. Moritz, and Tirano on the same day of travel.
  • The Red Train runs on the same UNESCO railway, but it does not include panoramic coaches, onboard infotainment, or reserved seating that come with the Bernina Express.
  • If you travel the entire route from Chur to Tirano, you will usually need to change trains once in St. Moritz or Pontresina, as regional services do not always run the full route directly.
  • Regional trains run multiple times daily, making it easy to choose a departure that fits your itinerary.
  • There is no catering service onboard, but you are welcome to bring your own food and drinks for the journey.

Bernina Red Train route overview

The Bernina Red Train runs across the Swiss Alps on the historic Albula–Bernina Railway, linking Chur, St. Moritz, and Tirano. The full railway stretches about 144 km and is known for its dramatic engineering and Alpine scenery.

The route combines two historic mountain lines: the Albula Line in northern Switzerland and the Bernina Line that climbs to the Bernina Pass before descending into Italy. Together they form the Albula–Bernina Railway. Along the way, trains cross nearly 200 bridges and viaducts and pass through more than 50 tunnels carved through the Alps.

Chur → St. Moritz (Albula Line)

High bridges, spiral tunnels, and classic Swiss alpine scenery.

  • Chur – Switzerland’s oldest town and the northern gateway to the route.
  • Thusis & Bergün – Alpine villages surrounded by forests and steep valleys.
  • Landwasser Viaduct – One of the most iconic sights on the railway. The curved stone bridge leads straight into a tunnel carved into the cliff.
  • St. Moritz – A famous alpine resort and the transition point between the Albula and Bernina lines.

St. Moritz → Tirano (Bernina Line)

Glaciers, high mountain passes, and a dramatic descent into Italy.

  • Pontresina – Gateway to the Bernina Massif.
  • Morteratsch Glacier – A sweeping view of one of the Eastern Alps’ largest glaciers.
  • Ospizio Bernina (2,253 m) – The highest point on the route, beside alpine lakes.
  • Alp Grüm – A panoramic balcony over Val Poschiavo.
  • Brusio Spiral Viaduct – A circular stone viaduct the train loops around to lose height.
  • Tirano – Palm trees, piazzas, and Italian espresso to end the ride.

The Bernina Red Train offers flexible starting points along its iconic route, making it ideal for day trips or multi-day adventures. Choose based on your location, time, and scenery priorities—panoramic windows and seat reservations are recommended year-round.

Train at St. Moritz

From St. Moritz

Best for shorter 2.5-hour alpine journeys to Tirano.

  • Journey highlights: Ospizio Bernina peak, Alp Grüm views, and Brusio Spiral Viaduct descent.

Bernina Red Train: 1st Class vs 2nd Class

couple on the train

1st Class

First class on the Bernina Red Train offers a quieter and more spacious way to experience the Alpine route. While the scenery is the same across all coaches, first-class cabins provide extra comfort for longer journeys.

  • Seating and comfort: First-class coaches typically have a 2+1 seating layout, which means wider seats, more legroom, and extra aisle space. The cabins are usually less crowded, creating a calmer atmosphere for the journey.
  • Views and windows: Large panoramic windows allow clear views of the surrounding Alps. The scenery is identical to second class, but the quieter cabin often makes it easier to relax and enjoy the landscapes.
  • Atmosphere: First class tends to be less busy and more peaceful, making it a good choice for couples, photographers, or travelers doing the full route between Chur, St. Moritz, and Tirano.
  • Best for: Travelers looking for extra comfort, more personal space, and a quieter ride across the Alps.
Seats inside the Brenina Express

2nd Class

Second class is the most common way to travel on the Bernina Red Train and offers excellent value while still delivering the same spectacular Alpine scenery.

  • Seating and comfort: Second-class coaches usually have a 2+2 seating layout, with comfortable seats arranged on both sides of the aisle. While the seats are more compact than first class, they are still well suited for the scenic journey.
  • Views and windows: Large windows on both sides of the train provide great views of the mountains, glaciers, and valleys along the Albula–Bernina Railway. Some regional trains also have openable windows, which photographers love for glare-free shots.
  • Atmosphere: Second class is typically livelier and more social, often filled with families, backpackers, and day-trippers exploring the route.
  • Best for: Budget travelers, families, and anyone who wants to experience the famous Bernina railway without paying the premium for first class.

Best time to take the Bernina Red Train

Ride year-round, but seasons transform the UNESCO route—Ospizio Bernina (2,253 m, the highest point) shines in every one. Frequent trains run daily; check for weather closures above 2,000 m.

Photography tips for the Bernina Red Train

Capture the UNESCO route's viaducts, glaciers, and lakes through panoramic windows—both classes work great with these hacks.

  • Choose your side wisely: Sit left (south-facing) from Chur/St. Moritz to Tirano for glaciers and Lago Bianco; right (north-facing) for return trips and Albula gorges.
  • Crack open windows: Use ventilation sliders for glare-free shots (summer only); avoids fingerprints on glass.
  • Dress dark: Wear black/navy to cut interior reflections in bright light—key for Ospizio Bernina vistas.
  • Time it right: Ride early morning or late afternoon to dodge midday sun; golden hour lights up Landwasser Viaduct perfectly.
  • Gear essentials: Wide-angle lens (16-35mm), polarizer filter, fast shutter (1/500s+); burst mode for Brusio Spiral motion.
  • Pro spots: Lean into curves at Alp Grüm or Montebello; hop off at Bergün for viaduct selfies.
  • Apps & settings: Use PhotoPills for sun position; RAW format for editing snowy highlights.

Bonus: 1st class quieter cars mean less jostling for window space.

Frequently asked questions about the Bernina Red Train

Is the Bernina Red Train the same as the Bernina Express?

Not exactly. Both run on the same UNESCO-listed railway and follow the same scenic route, but the Red Train is the regular regional service with flexible travel and no mandatory reservations.

Do I need to reserve seats?

No. Seat reservations are generally not required on the Bernina Red Train. You can board any available seat with a valid ticket, though trains may be busier during peak summer months.

Can I open the train windows?

Yes, on many regional trains the windows can be opened. This is one reason photographers often prefer the Red Train over the panoramic Bernina Express coaches.

Can I get off at stops along the route?

Yes. The Red Train stops at many stations along the line, so you can hop off at scenic villages and continue your journey on a later train.

Is 1st class worth it?
