It has been spectacular. I was able to see the mountains covered in snow, and I had time to visit St. Moritz and enjoy its landscapes.

It was an incredible experience from start to finish. From the ease of purchasing tickets on the app to finding the train at St. Moritz station (they are the last trains from left to right, red and unmistakable). The trip is even more enjoyable thanks to the panoramic windows that can be opened. The landscapes are wonderful and unforgettable, and the route is very well designed for enjoying and photographing every moment. It was a tremendous experience and we are very happy to have had it.

Combo: Bernina Express Ticket + Bernina Red Train Ticket

The Bernina Red Train refers to the regular regional trains that travel across the Swiss Alps on the same spectacular route as the Bernina Express. Operated by the Rhaetian Railway, these trains connect Switzerland and Italy while offering the same dramatic alpine scenery—glaciers, lakes, viaducts, and mountain passes.

Unlike the panoramic Bernina Express, the Red Train runs as a flexible regional service, making it a popular option for travelers who want to explore the route at their own pace.

Bernina Red Train at a glance

  • Operator: Rhaetian Railway
  • Route: Runs on the UNESCO-listed Albula–Bernina Railway
  • Main towns: Chur, St. Moritz, and Tirano
  • Total route length: ~144 km across the Swiss Alps
  • Seat reservations: Not required
  • Ticket type: Flexible (board any train on the route the same day)
  • Train classes: 1st and 2nd class seating available
  • Experience: Same Alpine scenery as the Bernina Express but with more flexibility

Good to know: The Bernina Red Train is not a different railway, it’s simply the regular regional train service running on the same UNESCO-listed route as the Bernina Express.
